NBA 12/13 WALKTHROUGH G3 Spurs vs Grizzlies

  • Coaches have to do exelent job to put their players in situation where they can be successful, create environment and let them win.
  • The players are extension of what coach teach them.
  • Coaches  have to prepare their teams for all possible scenarios they may face.
But if you play your opponent with conviction you have great chance to win.You have to explane players why you play it, that gives them bit of ownership and they will understand it better and of course you have to repet those plays over and over in practice.
Somtimes your game plan from some reasons, dosn't work. Good example is   Game 3, where after sloppy begining, the Spurs cauht up rhitm and sturted to execute game plan.
As usual, the Spurs haven't panicked and started to bounce back from behind in a major way, cutting the big deficit and force overtime. From there, Tim Duncan took over, leading the Spurs to a decisive win.
First,  let's check stats:

                                  Shot Selection - 1stQ

See belowe how Spurs beat Grizzlies on the floor. They simple make adjustments on the fly and exploited an advantages such as:

                                         Transitionn Offense

The Grizzlies weren't able to counter the Spurs in transition because of their tall unit was slow in defensive transition

                                          Spacing and Read

The Spurs spacing and reading the defense was tremendous.Every time the Grizzlies high hedge Spurs players read it and punished  either scoring from perimeter or under basket.
                                            Pick and Roll

The same situation was when we talk about Grizzlies pick and roll defense. They send to high their bigs far from the basket. The defense that they employed was unadequate to counter the Spurs.

Walkthrough EL 2013 finale game: Olympiacos At - Real Ma

The Olypiacos bigest strength is that they have several true leaders on their team - said legendary coach Dan Peterson.

                                   Leaders 3's Performance

Spanuolis 3pts contribution was huge and it come after Olympiacos fought back. He steped up after struggling to score in the first half and hit on different ways, using: ball picks or of the ball picks.
Above on the picture, you can notice degree of opponent pressure, what he faced and how he beat those pressure, at the point off offense.
I can't neglect the fact about Olympiacos exelent communication and teamwork what you can see, on the pictures.
On the diagram dawn, is comparation with Fernandez. If you compare percentages Fernandez made a 50% and Spanuolis 55%. Ironicly, most important of that, Spanuolis made all of them when score was tight.

                                              Most used set

Some conclusion about finale four tournament:
  • Mental toughness
Never give up was Olympiacos moto. They was able to compose themselves, always believed that they could win, maintained poise and confidence, never gave up.They was able to come back from behind and took momentum when the lights came on.

  • Defense wins championships
Olympiacos offense during the finale four tournamet was impressive. But it has been their fondation for success. In fact that they give up a lot of points in big game, they managed and prove that their identity is team detense.

  • Hype factor impact
When it come to the finale stage, the only thing that count is result not hype. For Olympiacos the big game wasn't the reason to be so excited, they showed this trait throughout entire tournament and as underdog won EL title, second time in the rów

  • Leadership Issue
Player leadership is unavoidable. You can go so far without having true leaders in your team.We all saw examples from semifinale and finale, what does it  mean lack of leadership, specialy in deciding moments. What mentioned   legendary coach DaÅ„ Peterson, the Olypiacos  bigest strength is that they have several true leaders on their team, not only one.
Spanuolis and his teammates showed great leadership skills and that's why they are the best, they motivated each other and  lead by example. No one outworked them.

  • Control  controlable
You can't control enviroment.Things that you definitely control by yourself is your effort and attitude. The great example is Olympiacos and their tremedou comming back after being behind in the final game

  • The reason for excuses
Hard fouls at the end of the game are only acts for being excused for not doing the right things, not realy  for players  outrage. The fact is that one play never wins or loses a game.Winning and losing is culmination of every play that takes place after toss up.

  • Mony don't play
Olympiacos played good basketball during the regular season up to finale four but not an amazing one. They entered the playoffs a little bit under the radar.   They was willing to do whatever it took to prove people are wrong and show he could make it in the final four.

Walkthrough EL 2013 Semifinale: Barcelona - Real

Knowing that Navaro's contribution in Barcelona offense is huge, Real Madrid at the beginig played an exelent defense and they limited him from touches and open looks, specialy behind the arc. That was right play for Real that guaranted them to win.
Barcelona's offense mostly rely on Navaro points, usualy off the picks and from pick & roll.
But what is going on when he's denied from the ball?
The strategy that Real employed wasn't a new stuff. The first who did it in the regular season was Partizan Belgrad, (I've mentioned it previously on my Twitter) denying him full court and switching on the picks forcing other players to shot the ball.
Both coaches used several options of junk defense in order to linit opponents main scoring treats.

                                   Barcelona  Defense

Barcelona put emphasis to limit Carrol and Fernandez from touches. In offense they found useful playing stagger for Carrol.

Option 1+4

Option 2+3

Real Madrid Defense

For Real defense it was all about to limit Navaro taches. They used couple of
options to stop him knowing that he is terific shooter and also has ability to create for others teammates.
Real's principles in Defense:
  • Align Properly
This is the most important aspect in defending any offense. It is important that you not only align soundly, but align in a manner that the offense is not sure what you are doing.
  • Keep the ball moving laterally.
Try to squeeze plays, but if you play a stronger team, you must count that holes are going to open up.
  • Attack the play before it develops.
Be aggressive force opponent to make a quick decision
  • Play to win the game

Optiion 1+4

                                                            Option 112

                                                             Option Trap

ABA League: Walkthrough Semifinale C.Zvezda BG - Radnicki KG

Radnicki KG was about 3 min to secure place in Euroleague. Coach Nikolic come in this semifinal game with better plan than opponent, both in defense and offense. But what has happened at the end, they was simple beatten by themself.
The big lesson from this game are little things. What realy make deference from looser and winner is the little things and those positive or negative always have a big impact on final score.
For example small detail: if instedad to drive stright to the basket player just change direction, the final outcome of the game I'm sure would be different.
With 3 min to go and 7pts up, Radnicki showed unconsistency both in offense and defense. It's adlways said that a bad offense lead into bad defense and reverse.
Radnicki haried up in all of their 8 possesion and has been beatten on defensive board, they also made bad decisions with the ball. First of all, let see some stats:

Above is stats from full game and also from the last 3 minutes. But what realy had big influence on Radnicki loss?
When you up 7 at the end of the game, usualy the clock is your greatest enemy, not opponent. You don't need to look for open 3, just slow down pace, be double focused, mentaly tough and execute plan to the end of the game.

Defense

Coach Nikolic prepared great strategy in defense, limiting the best C.Zvezda player, Rakocevic (see Breakdown C.Zvezda 3's) from the touching the ball and provoked other opponent players to be wide open and shoot from long range.
It's tottaly brought out C.Zvezda of off the game and it payed off, specialy in 4th quarter, what put Radnicki on the edge over opponen.

What Radnicki did wrong during the entire game is failed to box out and rebound missed shot.

Offense

During the game they realy did an exelent job playing single pick and roll.
Coach Nikolic employed various options from horns aligment.
Radnicki has protected better the ball than C.Zvezda (14 turnovers),  commited only 10 turnovers. But they commited 4 of them in the last 3 min of the game.
In my oppinion Radnicki commited 2 more turnovers in the last 3 min, see how:

Turnover 1

PG Capin(showed lack of court vision) was loked on his long drive from the top to the baseline and finished without good angle to pass, only option was open player on the top of the key, but he hasn't seen him.

Turnover 2

After good isolation on the low block Bryan(lack of footwork) hasn't recognised that he's corraled by 3 opponents, instead he commited travel. Notice, shot clock and time left.

Turnover 3

Almost 7 sec to the end of shot clock Markovic(lack of patience and shot selection) pulled and missed contested 3's. Statisticaly it's missed shot but for me it is bad shot selection and it's turnover.

Turnover 4

Once more, Capin penetrated from the top toward the baseline and it was the prety same situations when he previously commited turnover but this time he falled down.

Turnover 5

C.Zvevda did a good job in defense coraling opponents big players when they have the ball. Bircevic had options to pass the ball, he lowered the ball and opportunity left, there were 3 wide open playes.

Turnover 6

It was last possesion, Radnicki was 1 down and 7 sec to go. C.Zvezda decide to defend possesion, however it was full court possesion it was ridicoulous decision but worked because Markovic huried up and 4 sec to the end he passed to White. Opponent defender desperatly scrambled to close out and he was in unbalanced situation to defend drive, but White pulled 3's and win has gone.
It was enough time to make a better angle for shot or force defense to commit foul or sink 2 pointers.
Radnicki haven't sized momentum and won a game, however opportunity was great. Mainly because of players lack of killing instict.
I very appreciate what once legendary coach Bob Knight said: "Win favours those who are better prepared".
But we know that is not true at all, at least watching this game?

NBA: Walkthrough Clippers Offense

Offense is Spacing, Spacing is Offense - Chack Daily
The system perfectly executed, can lead you into championship title in other hand into a mess. It can bring out the best in some players and alternate others.
Also system can make a barier between a coach and management. Now, let's compare efficiency of two diferent systems Clippers and Lakers. First of all, go trough numbers:

                             4 Winning factors – Offense 2012/13

                            The Clippers Offensive Philosophy

For the Clippers system they run is CPS. They do not need to worry about the Princetone, 7 sec or lees, etc., just put the ball in their best player's hands.
Coach Del Negro found the best option for his team and the Clippers call it the Chris Paul System.
There is one strong principle, players must be patience until the defense is leveraged.

The CPS means make the right play, every time Clippers come down the court,  they make sure that two people have to guard them, no matter what they do. If they're in a ballpick process, they make two guard one Clipper and then somebody is going to be open.

The Clippers have found harmony in simplicity. When they need to adjust on the fly,  they rely on the simplicity that drives their offense and maximize strengths like speed, athleticism, and exelent communication.
